Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

I split about two cords each year. I only need the splitter for the rounds near the base of most trees. Sure, its slow, but it saves a lot of frustrating axe swinging. I use it where the tree falls by moving it with a two wheel hand truck. At age 67, I couldn't be much happier with this product.

I used to split logs with a sledge and two wedges and enjoyed the exercise. But then I got old. I could still cut my own firewood with my chain saw, but splitting it was getting to be too much, until I got the splitter. Now splitting is easy and still provides just the right amount of exercise.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

Being a manual splitter it takes some effort but it has split all the logs I've tried. Granted the pieces I have are already spit into chunks but I'm using it to make some smaller pieces to fill around the bigger pieces. It is also good that I can use it in the basement where an axe is not so good. On the down side it is not real fast so you have to be patient.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

I have already recommended this to some people. It does not care whether there are knots of not (pun). It will force a log to give up and become firewood size. We had a nice hurricane in Houston not long ago and some of the tree trunk pieces that one can obtain are really too big for it, but with patience and a little positioning even these big ones can be split. My gratitude to one of your previous reviewers for his instruction on using the splitter. Sorry but his instructions were better than those that come with the machine.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

This worked very well and is capable of splitting logs wider and slightly longer than the specs would indicate. Both myself and my 12 year-old son split red oak easily. The process is a bit slow but you can split difficult logs quite effectively without the wear and tear on the arms!

The wheels are very small, difficult to move over a gravel surface . You also need a nice level surface for it to work effectively, otherwise big heavy logs make it fall over.

But great value, and its quiet so you won't disturb the neighbors.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

I was only interested in splitting enough wood for myself to last a single winter season but was not about to break my back trying to split the numerous Blackjack trees with an axe. On the other hand a big hydraulic splitter was overkill.

This splitter is worth every penny! It is small enough to store easily and pulls out and sets up in no time with little effort. It is easy to use and is very well constructed. I read the other reviews before buying and I have not experienced any problems at all. Not even the minor ones listed by other reviewers. I have split Oak logs as large as 24" in diameter with ease. My 13 year old son is a slim kid and he uses the splitter with no difficulty at all. You can buy this product and not be disappointed!

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

I am in a wheelchair and I find the log splitter a very easy way of splitting wood. This will save me from having many injuries to my fingers and legs. I think they could have included better instructions on the use of the two handles. One handle pushes the wood up to the splitter quicker than the other handle. After the wood is up against the splitter, then use the other handle to make the split.

10-Ton, Manual Hydraulic
By billwfg from Palm Beach, Florida on 10/26/2008
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

At first the manual 10 ton log splitter seemed the answer to my families prays but after 1 hour of use the welds that hold the ramming part of the log slitter failed on a 15 inch long by 8 inch round maple wood log that had been dried for one year.
I am not asking Northern for an exchange of this product to an upgraded electric modal. Don't get me wrong I would like another manual but they do not have any and also when I was using this model the handles or at least one handle bent when I put a heaver log of the same size I mentioned above into the splitter. This machine has allot of potential but is not rugged enough for splitting oak or maple logs.
I will exchange this model for another that I hope will handle my once a month usage.
Thank You'

Super smooth - zen-like wood spliter

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

This device serves a purpose making it worth many times more than we paid - this was a definitely/extremely good purchase...

This splitter makes log splitting is smooth and easy ...incredibly smooth action (there are fast and slow pistons) makes the thing zen-like ...just put in a log, position it, and in seconds it will be split smoothly and easily, silently. We've read the reviews where others found that is was problematic to use - but for us it worked perfectly. Didn't scoot or jump around on the ground, just stayed still and super cleanly split logs of all different sizes.

Also, this design, manually operated, seems to me to be far, far more pleasant to operate than some gas operated "contraption" that is sputtering and smoking and making a racket and is a major pain to feed gas and oil and to store ...this thing is almost zen-like in how smooth and powerful it is ...it is easy to imagine having a beer or glass of wine and effortlessly, silently working on building our stock pile of firewood.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

We bought this to break up a small pile of logs. The spliter was not achored to anything and would move around when we pumped it, so we had to brace against a tree. Logs would roll off or would shift while splitting.
You really need someone to hold the log on, and pumping it was extremely difficult. We sent it back and will be getting a gas powered splitter.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

Log spliter is a great and helpful product, there's only one problem, the appature that holds the log on the splitter is too frail, it sould be made of a more durable material like steel. Mine bent after first log split, My neighbor is a welder and i had him remove them and attach longer 1/2 inch steel rods, which made it work perfect, the logs seem to just glide over it.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

Bought this in 2006. Felled two large trees with Northern's Gas Chain Saw.
Am 81 years old and partially disabled with severe back problem. However, was able to split all the logs while sitting in a chair. To split largest logs, would first cut a notch in one end using Norther's 16" Remington Electric Chain Saw. The wedge slipped into the notch and with a few manual pumps the log started splitting almost immediately. Great product!
Will never have to use the wedge and sledge again!

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

Have read some of the reviews and people have great expectations for very little cost. I chose this item since I had a weekend home in the mountains of Colorado. Most people have gasoline powered splitters for two or three thousand dollars. That is not what I needed. I can cut and split logs at my leisure, it does a great job for the ease of handling and the assigned capability of the device. That has to be the best cost effective log splittler that exists. If you want it to do everything, spend a thousand dollars. If you want a high capability, low capacity (come on you all, you wanted it to be manual) log splitter, this is the one. You have to consider best value in this instance. By far, this is a high value, cost effective approach. Want to split 8 cords a day, 24 inch logs, this isn't your answer. I can carry it in and out a crawl space or garage with ease. Use it as needed, no engines to start, or electricity to connect. Right tool for the right job.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

I haven't used a lot of log splitters. They are usually expensive. I have always split by hand with a maul or ax. I bought this unit to save me labor and the use of a wedge. I cut two cords of wood while testing it out. The log segments were mostly in the range of 10 - 14 inches in diameter. It split them with no problem. The wood was seasoned maple and many pieces had knots that would never have split from a a heavy blow from a maul. Yet I was surprised to see that splitter made short work of it. The piston is pulled back by two springs when you release the pressure by turning the top knob counterclockwise. After splitting a piece, you can save time when splitting the two halfs by turning the pressure release knob clockwise stopping the piston from retracting the full 18 inches. Larger pieces say 2ft wide still have to be reduced in size by banging in a grenade or wedge, and then splitting the halfs with this tool. Split 4 cords and this tool pays for itself. It is fun to use, highly portable(if you haul it by truck), and it provides good exercise without killing yourself. I highly recommend it.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

This item works fantastic, however it could use some improvement.

1. The splitting wedge isn't smooth through the transition to the rear wedge. Sometimes logs get stuck at that transition.

2. The little clips that are supposed to hold a log in place are quite small. I could see them breaking off from heavier logs or someone stepping on them accidentally.

3. It takes a while to get the cylinder extended to the edge of the wood. Perhaps some bushings that would fit on the end of the cylinder to automatically lengthen it so you don't have to pump it as much. This would also benefit the unit by allowing someone to split log lenghts smaller than 12".

4. The wheels are really small and not really useful on uneven terrain.

This unit is extremely easy to use. I can see someone in a wheelchair being able to use it. The person that mentioned they thought it was tough to use probably needed to add some hydraulic fluid to his unit, or got a bad one.

I am a recently disabled firefighter in my mid 30's and obviously not being able to swing my axe to split down logs for the firepit anymore really bummed me out.
THIS tool is worth EVERY penny.
I tested it out by splitting down a 10" log down to over 30 splits.
I did this with only TWO fingers and only broke a sweat because it was 90 degrees out.
Simplicity in construction is another perk as faar as durability and maintenance.
Best part about this tool is that it has wheels like a hand truck and stores vertically and takes near no room in the shed.

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

When I first read the review about the 78 yr old wheelchair bound man using this machine with ease, I was excited. I can promise you this guy must have been King Kong or a Klingon. Admitly I was splitting logs that I could not have done by hand, some crossed grained hard oak, some 20 inches across. Each log required lots of force, sometimes even lifting the whole machine off the ground, and it seemed to exceed the limits of the hydraulic on ocassion. I would have to let it sit for a minute or two under pressure before I could advance the hydraulic. There were a few logs that I could not split but I did eventually get through the majority of them. However, I had to finish about 90% of them with a splitting maul to break all the fibers down. Overall, it did allow me to split logs, but the time and effort required was significant. I was attracted to this unit because it did not use gas and electric was not an option where I was using it without a generator. So A+ for the green factor.

Great splitter. Very easy to use. Just pump the handles and it will take care of the log. Splits hardwood logs up to 10 inches in diameter. Much more sturdy that the foot operated splitter. You may have to split the same log from both ends if it is tough or has a knot. Haven't found one I can't split yet.

I bought one of these dudes to supplement my hydraulic log splitter. I heat with firewood, and I wanted to have a backup splitter in case I was having problems with the gas-powered machine. I also have access to huge logs that contain a lot of wood but are too heavy to lift . I hoped the manual splitter would let me quarter them to make lifting and handling easier.
I am amazed at how fast his manual splitter can work. One lever is high speed, low pressure. The other lever is slow speed, high pressure. I use the fast lever until it bogs down and switch to the high-pressure side. I can split a 2-3 days heating supply using gigantic logs in about 1/2 hour. It is great!

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

The Northern Industrial Horizontal Log Splitter is a worthwhile tool for anyone needing help to split those oversized logs. I had a number of logs that were 18" inches and larger but I had no problem splitting them. Simply rotating the log in the craddle helps to split the logs into even smaller pieces is great. I was able to set up my splitter in a garden cart that allowed me to raise the splitter up to a reaonsable height for me to operate while it helped reduced any excessive bending and no sore back. Also, placing the unit into the cart made it even more easier to transport the splitter to different locations with ease. Due to the heavy weight of the unit, I found the small wheels that are attached to the unit limits the unit's mobility on dirt or non-paved areas. The unit is solid and very sturdy and is easy to operate. Although the instructions do not describe fully how to operate the unit, nevertheless the tool's designed is easy enough for anyone to quickly learn how to work it.

The 10 Manual Log Splitter is very easy to use. Don't be a dummy like I was and think that it is light and that it can be used on anything other than a flat surface. The four (4) log balance beams out to the side are not too sturdy and will ben if caught on the log. However if you take your time and use on a flat surface it is so much easier than using an ax. Good piece of machinery.

I purchased this primarily because I did not want the noise of a gas driven splitter or the inconvenience of having to run an electircal cord to an electric model. It also allows me to take it wherever I want; not just where there is a driveway or path. It works great! The only drawback to it is the size of the logs (lengthwise) that you can split. The maximum is about 18 inches. I find it also convenient to use a "spacer" (like a 4 x 4) to fill the gap when you are trying to split small logs. You don't have to pump the splitter all the way out.

It was a review by a guy who said that he got it for his 78 year old dad who was in a wheelchair that convinced me to get the product. When he said that his dad could split wood, I figured it was good enough for a 49 year old fully healthy male. The 10 ton hydraulic system makes it stronger than the 5 ton electric model. It's easy to use and the exercise is invigorating. It comes assembled and ready to go.
We're now getting a fireplace insert, so I anticipate using it a lot more. That's just fine with me!

I'm one of those people who likes to split wood by hand still. The problem is that I only like to split those nice easy peices. I bought this to split those really tough pieces. I've used it now on about five tough pieces and it does the job, but it's not much faster than doing them by hand. It's very slow to split with this. If it was the only tool in the shed, I'd have to buy all split wood, or use this every day of the week all spring and summer to get enough split for winter. I would recommend this to a friend only with the understanding that it has it's own small niche.

This is an awesome product. I needed to split some whole logs left over from last year and wanted to make some small pieces from this year's wood. I'm a little person, and swinging an axe for all this was not for me. Just open the box, insert the handles, place a log to be split, move the handles, and done! I'll be moving this into my basement for the winter and very happy that I will not be trying to split wood with an axe standing on snow and ice. Great buy!

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

Good splitter for the money. I buy a couple of cords a year to heat my home with a wood stove. The wood is pre-chopped, but some pieces are still too thick to burn effectively in my stove. This splitter makes the job very easy. It is so easy to use - even my 12 year old niece could use it. Powered splitters may have more power, but if you're just splitting a few logs, this is a great buy. A couple of notes to keep in mind: on the negative side, if you're just cutting logs down to size then an ax is faster. On the positive side, the 10-ton rating is deceptive. As long as you aren't splitting something more than ~ 18 inches long, this splitter can take some BIG round pieces. It handled sections of a tree trunk for me that would have taken forever to ax through.

Well, the splitter works really well for logs that I could easily split myself w/o said sad tool. Take thicker logs that you'd like to split and you come across the main design flaw with this instrument. The split axis is unnecessarily low: the piston attacks only inches above the log holder. which severely limits the log's diameter. My kids have a lot of fun with it and that's why I keep it. But maybe you should better keep shopping if you intend to put this tool to some serious use.

I am a 63 year old woman and I am able to use this splitter easily. The logs I'm splitting are madrone oak, live oak and fir. I have tried a few really hard oak logs and stopped trying to split them when I felt I may be forcing it too much. It may have split them, I just didn't want to try. But these have been very few. We had someone cut and split the trees we took down when clearing for our house and barn. He didn't split most of them into 4 pieces like we wanted. So using this splitter to split them. I have also used it to split round pieces that he didn't split at all. It works great makes the wood so much easier to handle in the fireplace and burn.

We dont use wood for heat but my elderly parents do, and they are on a fixed income. We try to help them as much as possible. Snce we live on wooded property and with all the windy weather in recent years there was always fallin trees and clean up was difficult. For my husband who has arthirtis so we were looking for something to make things easier for him at a reasonable price, so we could keep my parents supplied in wood for heat. My husband had seen some of these splittters online that cost more. I requested a catalog and signed up online for special offers from Northern Tools. We dont have a Northern Tool Store in our area. The cost of shipping was our only hold back to getting the item. So we planned to check out the log splitters when he was due his next doctor visit,in Hickory Ncin the meantime they sent us shipping code by email , I told my husband and he couldnt wait to order it, it arrived in about 3 days, that was FAST !!!! The next day my husband it set up (basically taking it out of the box) and started spitting wood. Pull a log on the splitter pump the handles and its split. He was amazed how easy it was, he says its a little slower that using hand splitting but it takes most of the work out. Its easier on his joints. This product has made it possible keep my parents warm this coming winter.Everyone that visits has to try it out they are amazed how easy it is to use. We highly reccomend this product to anyone who looking for a easier way to split wood, it is always a easier way for those who may have health problems to continue to split wood too. We are very happy

Comments about Kotulas 10-Ton Hydraulic Log Splitter:

I had an electric/hydraulic woodsplitter from another company that broke after two seasons and I could not afford another expensive one, so I bought this one instead.

So far it has split big logs that the other splitter wouldn't. I'm impressed by the splitting power generated by pulling and pushing the handles. It takes a few seconds longer to split this way, but it's much less expensive than an electric/hydraulic one.

In addition to that, it is giving my arms and shoulders quite a workout, as I own about seven acres of forest and have to split about three cord per year. So far it's working fine and I'd recommend it for the homeowner with a woodstove or fireplace. It's not intended for more than a few cords a year though in my estimation.

Don't buy this log splitter if you're considering splitting hundreds of logs per day. But, if you're like me, and split just a few logs at a time, this portable machine is perfect for you! The dual speed hydraulics work flawlessly, allowing for quick setup and powerful splitting. No noise, so your inner-city neighbors won't be getting upset. Easily transported in the trunk of your car.

I bought this splitter on sale and paid for the extended warranty. The first one only held up for about 2 weeks of splitting wood, then the hydralic fluid seal let go. It leaked all over everything. I finally gave up after a month of this and returned it to the store. They exchanged it and I thought I was all set. I was wrong. When I started to split the 4th log, the welds at the wedge broke, bending it, and the bar behind it back. The metal actually broke! I was furious!!!

When I took this one back, they replaced it. I'd thought I'd give it one more try. Well, I'm taking my 3rd one back. It's seals have let go! There are some serious quality issues with this equipment in my opinion. I can see something happening to one. But three? Not to mention the 3 trips to the nearest store, which cost me 120 miles in gas and travel time.

We heat with a wood stove and this splitter isn't up to the task of keeping anyone but the casual fireplace user supplied with split wood. You can't split anything over about 6" around with out having to worry about it failing. And don't plan on having it around for years. It won't last more than a season.

Dissapointed! I really wanted this to work as I am relying on wood to heat my house this winter. This splitter took way to much effort to split what I would consider easy splitting wood, like oak. So it's back to the 8lb. maul for me. Still looking for a better alternative to the maul that doesn't cost $1000.

This is a great value! Wish I had this wood splitter years ago! Using other tools to split wood is not only dangerous but back breaking. My wife loves to move the handles to get the exercise & I position the wood & as a team it is not only fun and easy but rewarding to see all the split wood without much effort. Thanks for offering this product!

My Dad purchased this splitter. He is 78 years old and in a wheelchair. I was concerned, when he told me it was a manual model, that he would be too frail to operate it. I removed it from the trunk of his car, unboxed it and rolled it to where he wanted it. We inserted the two handles (which was the extent of any assembly), inserted a log and the thing worked like a charm! We put logs in it with a diameter of 12 inches and my three year old could split the log like it was made out of styrofoam!! I was astounded! My Dad can move this easily, even from a wheelchair, because it is on two small wheels. He will have no problem splitting even very large logs. I will update on the durability after we try it for a season. Absolutely a great buy for the homeowner with available downed trees for use as heating!

This unit works great for personal & recreational fire place usage. This item is not meant for large quantity splitting. If you want to split wood for your own fireplace this is a great item. I would recommend this to anyone who loves to have a fire burning on the weekend when the temperature drops.

I had been looking for a log splitter for a while, and was taken aback at the price of gas powered units. When I got this splitter I was pleased with not only the fantastic price, but also with its performance. It does the job of the gas powered splitters at 10% of the price - how can you beat that?
