I purchased two of these for my 3 and 5 year old sons. They were such a big hit. They use these in the dirt instead of the sand. Easy to put together. I'm glad I purchased these instead of the more expensive excavators. Worth every dollar I paid.

We bought this for our 4 year old after a trip to a Kansas park. We live in Tennessee and were visiting relatives in Kansas. We spent more time in the park than at the house. We could not get our son to leave the park because he had found an excavator to play with. When we returned from the trip, my husband began gathering parts to make an excavator like our son had fallen in love with. Then the NorthernTool Cataloge came in the mail and we saw this excavator. The delivery was very quick and the price is much cheaper than the effort involved in making one. The quality is great but I still have problems getting him to come inside. He loves this excavator, his only complaint was that it was red (his favorite color is orange). Anyway, we can alway spray paint it. Bottom line, for an outside-loving child from ages 2-6 this a must have! Assembly was very simple and quick.

I bought this for the kids for Christmas. They could hardly wait to get it out side to use it. It is a fun toy for the kids but built rather light. Overall it is not a bad buy.

Kids loved it. Great toy for kids 3rd grade and less. Any older too big for it. Kept my kids busy for hours. The one toy they keep comming back for. Only problem was the nuts and bolts fell out after three months. I switched to locking nuts and the problem was solved.

Both my 4 and 7 year olds love this thing. Luckly we have a huge sandbox though because I know they'd be dumping the sand outside of the box if it would reach. We have had our digger for a couple years now and it is holding up well other than some surface rust on the bucket where the paint flaked off. Not bad considering it is exposed to the elements for nine months out of the year. Assembly was easy, it works great, and it entertains the kids for hours - who could ask for more??

I bought 2 of these based on the reviews I read. I'm glad I did. They are well made and one of the best buys I've made in a long time; well worth the cost. My nephews love them. The 5 yr. old took right to it. The 3 yr. old took a little longer but he's got it now. I just wish they'd make an adult size so I could play too!

The sand digger I would say is suitable for ages 5 and up. My 2 year old has a lot of trouble lifting the bucket to dig. The sand digger could use a little more seat clearance between the seat and handles in order to pull up sand.

Three grandchildren ages 7, 6 and 4 loved this toy. The 4 year old boy got on it and in less than 5 minutes was moving sand like the big boys from one spot in the sand box to the bed of his big T***a Truck hauler. He stayed on the thing for more than two solid hours until called to wash up for supper. The two girls can't get on it if their brother is in the yard. This scenario has replayed for six months running so far. I'd say the toy was a great success. The only down side is that my DIL and son complain of sand all over the house now. Gotta love it. UPS beat up the flimsy box it came in but all parts were intact.

I loved playing with one of these when I was a kid so I got one for my three year old son. He loves it. He is about the size of a six year old so it is a little small for him but for quality and function I was not disappointed. We had a tard sale and several people tried to buy it. We mentioned it to his pediatrician and pretty soon I was in her office looking it up on your site for her.

First I have to say that the base for this toy could NOT be built for this price, making this an excellent value.
I have two little people who are tough on everything, one is a 4yr old girl the other a 2 yr old boy. These two went nuts over the dirt digger and handled the controls right away. Lucky for me I bought two of them.
Only things I thought I would give a negative tone too would be these, the seat seems too close to be able to pull the handles all the way back, (my 4 yr old actually prefers it close). The other thing is that the bucket won't quite bump it's payload when extended. Both of these are cured with the drlling of a few holes, but not nesessary for complete enjoyment.
My 2yr old can work the controls well but has to stand to turn the unit (could have foot pegs to keep him in the seat when digging).
We have used this in my pile of driveway gravel and my little girl did great, I am sure this is fantastic in sand or pea gravel.
Putting this together was fairly easy, under 30 min., really only two bolts/nuts for the seat and one more for the riging, everything else is already assembled. Slide the seat post into the base and dig !
Too cool !! Will last a LONG time I'm sure !! Getting more for the nephews !!

Both just took minutes to learn how they work.
Played in the fall digging in the sandbox.
First snow they both had to go outside to dig up the snow.

We tied a garden gnome to the seat of this toy with a sign on his back, 'for hire', & planted it in the driveway of some friends who run an excavation business. It worked, as we all got a good laugh, especially since we put the bucket on backwards. You might consider calling it a "sandlot toy/yard ornament" in the catalog.

We have three of these at our house and our boys love them! Sometimes they can be a little difficult for them, but it encourages hand eye coordination. The boys were 3 and 4 when we first bought them, now they are 4 1/2 and 6 and they still love this toy.

The digger is okay for the amount we spent on it. I wish we would have bought a higher end brand though. The gears on the device are too close, making it almost impossible for our son to manipulate the digger while sitting on the seat. The packaging was very poor. The box was open at the top, exposing the toy. There were some scratches on it because of this, but we figured it would get alot more scratched, so ignored it.

We have a large sandbox and the the kids have always loved playing with these things when we are out and about at the playgrounds. So I thought having one at home would be fun for them. They love it. It keeps them occupied for awhile and they love moving the sand around to build whatever it is they are building that day.

The Good: Great Price for such a cool little toy. My 2 1/2 yr. son loves it even though he hasn't develpoed the coordination to work it like my 4 yr. daughter.

This "Little Dipper" is just what our little rascals need to work with in the sand pile (pit). In addition to having "GREAT OUTDOOR FUN", this tool/toy should work with them on building their physical strength, enhance their thinking process, encourage planning with expectations of results as well as building eye - hand coordination. Most every little boy wants to dig in the dirt with their hands as a toddler by age 2, with a shovel at age 3, so why not a scooper at age 4. We're hoping this with be a hit with our 3 & 4-year old grandsons for at least the next 5-6 years. PS. This kind of DIRT washes off. It sure beats the heck out of video games.

The sand digger appears to be a great toy- my only draw back is that when you move it the seat lifts out- although it is no big deal because you just stick it back in! My 6 year old loves it.... my two year old loves to try, although his feet do not touch the ground with it so it is hard for him to turn it and dig and dump the sand... the product also shipped with the box halfway open so I did not like that... but overall this appears to be a good little toy that will hold out for a long time (it is not plastic)... I am hoping that all of the reviews I read will pay off and this will be a great toy for my little ones and their friends!

The product was not very durable. It almost looks cheap and not able to withstand the weather of being outside in a sandbox. I wonder if it will blow over with the wind!!! Maybe it needs something to hold it down!

I have a hotel on the beach in Baja California. I bought two of these toys and put them out on the sand. When there are kids around, they are in constant use. So far they have proven very sturdy and withstand the elements well. They were WELL worth the money, and I will buy some more if anything happens to the ones I have!

They both have grown up in excavators, tractors, loaders and such so they're getting quite skillfull with them! Their ages are 3 and 5. What a neat toy! They're having a great time with them in the snow and can't wait until spring to use them in the sand.

Great little toy - my 3 year old loves it. Perfect price and perfect size for the little guy - one thing to note is that it is designed for the younger smaller child, so don't plan on getting one for your teenager or he/she will be too big for the item.

That said, although it is winter here in the northeast and he has not been able to work the dirt/sand with it yet, his Thomas the train engines are getting scooped up a lot!

If you consider what you pay for this, its a great item. Overall its pretty robust and well built but you get what you pay for. In this price range of course there are no bearings so it can bind up a bit. If your looking for a family heirloom this isn't it. If your looking for an inexpensive toy the kids can have hours of fun on, this is for you. Just be careful with young ones as there are several pinch points.
On a side note. Mine got crushed in shipping. Customer service was excellent. Got a new unit no questions asked. Even worked out a deal on upgraded shipping to get it in time for Christmas. Decent product but awesome customer service will keep me coming back.

Purchased 2. First unit missing critical hardware, nuts, bolts, washers. Second unit also missing critical hardware, but it was also missing the digger bucket. Paint was flaking off on several components for both units. Assembly of both units was difficult due to welded components being slightly mis-aligned. Overall poor product quality and poor packaging quality control.

NTE Customer Service very responsive and helpful. Unfortunately, the replacement unit was also missing hardware.

I got this for my 4 year old son for Xmas. He hasn't been able to use it very much because of the weather. He really likes it so far.
I only have a couple complaints. It should have an adjustable seat. The one lever comes too close to his body when he is trying to lift the boom. It would also be nice if it had some type of wheels so it would be easier for him to move around. It seems to be fairly well built. But it needs some adjustability to fit different sized kids.
I may end up adding wheels and a tounge so he can move it around like a trailer behind his pedal tractor. I may also make the seat adjustable. I think when the weather gets warm, it should keep him occupied for long periods of time.

Was purchased for a boss for a gag gift because he always wanted to take the backhoes. It is definitely designed for the smaller children. Maybe 2-5 yrs. My 7-year-old was a bit too large. It is built kind of lightweight to dig anything but the softest dirt. For the price I can't expect it to hold up to a rough child anyway.

Little tykes will love operating this shovel. It works! The seat is small and close to controls making this appropriate for kids less than 40lbs. Some re-inforcement welds and arm extensions could make this unit last longer i n use by your child.

I can't rave enough about the little digger. I bought my 3yr old son two of them for just before Christmas. One for home and one for Grandmas house and he spends hours on them digging and making dirt piles. This is a great outdoor toy for generations of use, very simple and well made. As a professional Fabricator I couldn't make it for less. Great buy and hrs of fun for the kids.

This is a well made toy that is simple and efficient. My son had it down pat in 3 minutes. It has a sturdy bucket that makes quick work of dirt and small roots. Even stood up to me and my fellow Firefighters trying it out pre christmas!!!! Swivels very well and has a great reach. May have to purchase another as soon as the little girl gets mobile.
Only thing that could be better is that the seat needs to be set back a few more inches. When my son tries to pull back and raise the bucket the handles contact the seat. Not anything serious, but could easily be corrected.
I would recommend this toy to every parent wiht a young child.

I heard about Northern Tools from a review for a similar product. The reviewer was complaining about the product I was considering, and after reading the review, I checked out Northern Tools site, and found what I was looking for at less than half the price! It took 3 days to for it to get here. It was missing a few screws, but we could handle that. Christmas day our 4 year old was exstatic! I was so glad the weather was nice enough for him to go out and start digging. Our back yard now has a huge "pit" in it. But isn't that what childhood is for?

The Little Digger was 'THE ' hit of Christmas day. Our 5 year old grandson carried/drug the top half back to the house after we had taken it out to the sand pile because he said, "He REALLY wants to take care of this toy"

This is a great digger! We own a construction company and my son loves the large equipment so this give him a chance to act like Daddy and Umpa and dig away! It is a little tall for his leggs (2 1/2 yrs old) but we just use a few bricks for him to prop his feet on. I have to take it everywhere from the snow piles back in to the house for him to move some toys around (on a rug of course it would damage the floors)...I'm buying a second to have at his sitters! I recommend it highly.

Love the digger! It's very sturdy. Who needs sand - works great in the snow, too!!. I have a daycare in my home so, it is perfect for my little people. I bought 2 to start with (for less fighting)...I may be back in the spring to buy 2 more. I only had one problem with them...they were both missing many of their screws, nuts and washers to put them together... be sure to have some on hand so you don't have to wait for replacements to be shipped to you. This was a Easter present for my grandson's. They and all the children who come around play with it. This is a great toy for kids from the age 2 thur 12 they just loves it alot, It is touch and hard toy any time it can go thur all these kids I got here. This little toy was well thought out and well designed. It is easy for kids from 3 or 4 years old on up to 6 or 7 to operate and figure out. No batteries, no flashing lights, just a good, old fashioned toy that works. Kids need to use their imaginations and this toy lets them do just that. If there was one criticism it would be the difficulty of assembly. Also, the seat post/ pivot was a hard fit requiring the paint to be removed which could result in corrosion. I added washers and grease to every joint during assembly, but some people might not have grease available. Overall, good toy.

Since then, one of my daycare parents got one for his son, plus I have bought 2 more for my nephews! It's easy for the kids to use and light enough for them to pick up and move "to a new digging spot!" IT'S JUST GREAT!!!!

I have two boys ages 9 and 2. I made the mistake of thinking 1 digger would be enough. I was very pleased with the purchase. I received the digger in the time frame stated and in good condition. VERY EASY TO ASSEMBLE!!!! Thank you!
So pleased in fact that to keep my sanity in check I 've ordered another one. The first one has yet to be played with outside.(too much rain) So hopefully by the time I get the second one the weather will be better. Thanks so much for the pleasant online experience.

Grandson Loved it. We put it in his sand Box and He plays with it
whenever he can, if the weather permitting. I expect he will do more this summer.

My son got this for Christmas. Once we set it up my son and daughter fought to play with it!!

We have "Scooped" everything from Legos to sand. They really enjoy it and will have years of fun. We will be bringing it to the lake this summer to use on the beach.

With the quality paint job we are sure that it will last for many summers to come.

We recently got this for our son and he already loves it alot and wants to get out to play with it at every chance. Another great feature is that it is very easy to store as it will come apart from the base. Have already recommended this to other family members.

I purchased this item for my grandchildren! It has given them hours of fun! The digger is well constructed and very stable! It has taken the punishment of four grandchildren and held up very well. I would not recommend this for the very young because of the moving parts, but my grandchildren are from 3 to 7
years of age and it has worked out well!
