We use the Magic Heat to heat a spare room. Our chimney goes right through the wall(triple wall pipe) and then it goes up through the extra rooms ceiling. The heat reclaimer is located in the unheated extra room and works wonderful. My parrots are in that room and through out this cold winter it has maintained 75 - 80 degrees! This saves me $30-$40 a month to heat this room, the Magic Heater has paid for itself already. I don't have any complaints about this project, it works great, inexpensive to run and was easy to install on the chimney pipe. We highly recommend this product, in fact we have 2! One on a wood stove in our work building and it heats a office room.

i use the product in our home. we live at 6500 ft. elevation and it gets cold and windy, but the heat this unit puts out is awesome. its even keeping the little woman warm!!! i havent had 2 clean the wood burner in 5 days cause there isnt hardly any ashes left. it is a tad noisy, but i just turn up the tv lol. it isnt bulky i had 2 add that cause it was a required field.

I installed the magic heat in my 30+40 garage and could'nt believe how much heat is extraced from my chimney. the garage heats up at least 45 minutes faster, and I can use less wood It is a great investment.

I love this thing despite how ugly it is, I mean it's pretty big, and good luck hiding the cord, kind of kills the traditional wood stove look, but aesthetics aside it really works like a charm. Not only is the stove pipe much cooler after it, meaning more heat in the house and less up the chimney, but the fan also circulates the hot air very well also. Testing it with an infrared/laser thermometer once while my stove was cranking, the pipe was 700 degrees just below this unit and 300 degrees above it, and while the pipe was always cooler further from the stove it never dropped 400 degrees in a foot and a half, so I am convinced that it really works, and I feel it paid for itself in the first season in wood savings. Takes the heat that would be wasted with exhaust and makes it useful. I have this installed above a wood burning furnace in my garage. Increased the temp of the 2 car garage by 20 degrees (normally abient temp). Going out to feed the fire has become that much less dreadful come central new york winters. Fairly easy to install if you know what your doing but could be tricky for less experienced users. If you installed the chimney yourself u can do it no problem, if u didn't I would call someone who has before.

I recently purchased this reclaimer, it was shown as a back order but I received it within 5 days. When I did it was very easy to install and works "like a charm". I have not experienced the reduction in wood use, as I just bought and installed it. But after reading the reviews and installing it, I have no doubt the long term benefit will be substantial.
I would recommend this for any wood stove application, just assure you have the proper distance from stove to reclaimer and vent pipe flow.

Bought one of these for our basement stove - it used to take a 2.5 - 3 hours to heat up the basement to the point where you could take off your Carhart Coveralls - now with this baby installed, within 45 minutes you have a cozy living environment. The best thing of all is I go through about 1/3rd less firewood per season. I will be buying another one for my main living area stove upstairs - I am sending one to my folks in Fairbanks for Christmas...Shhhh! It is a surprise! I have this in my wood burner and besides reclaiming the heat going up the chimney it also seems to move the radiant heat that comes off the woodburner itself. A few pulls on the cleaning rod and it is ready for the next fire.
It was very easy to install. I followed the directions and cut out the piece of chimney pipe and it fit right in. I plugged it in and built a fire and here comes the heat.

This is my third winter heating my drafty 2-story 1890 house with wood. This Magic Heat unit has amazed me. The temp difference from the living room to the bedrooms used to be huge. Then I installed this unit in between the stove and where the stovepipe goes into the chimney. The Magic Heat has a fan that blows hot air across the living room and up the stairs so even the bedrooms stay warm. I think I'm using half as much firewood. The hot air produced is a different kind of heat than the convection from the stove itself. It's free, clean heat that used to go up the chimney. One of the best investments I ever made.

This is my second winter using the Magic Heat Reclaimer and I'm sold on it's effectiveness. The first winter, it took a bit of getting used to, but that's to be expected. My wood stove is a very efficient Englander coal/woodburner and did a fine job all on its own. But when I added the Magic Heat Reclaimer it practically doubled the output using about 50% less wood. I burn a mix of woods including post oak, blackjack oak, red oak, hackberry and red cedar, and the majority of it is well seasoned. It doesn't seem to make much difference what kind of wood I burn, the Magic Heat Reclaimer pumps out more heat regardless of what I feed the stove.

Pros:

It works as advertised and requires very little maintenance during the heating season. The price is right and the quality is good.

Cons:

There are a few design flaws that didn't become apparaent to me until I cleaned it this fall before the heating season started. The inside of the 'box' is poorly designed and has lots of nooks and crannies for soot buildup to become a problem. The cleaning rod mechanism is limited by the fact that as the heating season progresses, soot builds up at the heat exchanger tube terminations and there's nothing you can do about it but wait till a warm day or until the end of the heating season to clean it. And cleaning it is a serious hassle if you don't have help.

The other design flaw has to do with the fan and the heat exchanger tubes. The fan has to work pretty hard to force air through the tubes because the entrance to the back of the tubes is too close to the fan and the tubes aren't inletted. What I mean is that the tubes are just welded to a flat piece of steel and the fan blows directly on that surface. Modifying the plate that the tubes are welded to would seriously increase the fans blowing capacity. Adding a venturi or funnel shape to the plate for each tube is all that would be required to make it much more efficient.

In conclusion, I have to say that the Magic Heat Reclaimer is a fantastic idea and a wonderful addition to any coal/gas/wood stove heating system. But you have to totally re-learn the art of heating with wood once you install the Magic Heat Reclaimer. So expect a learning curve and accept the extra maintenance that comes along with it and enjoy more heat from less wood. It's a pretty fair exchange and one that I'm willing to live with.

to our amazement this device started dispensing heat BEFORE the original heat fan. we get more heat off of the wood and coal and there is much less heat loss out of the chimney.

I bought the Magic Heat Reclaimer several years ago. It was one of those "well I guess I will try it" purchases. It has exceded all my expectations! I have an 1,800 square foot woodworking shop with ten foot ceiling. My hanging gas heater was eating me up with fuel costs. The woodburner helped but the gas heater continued to cycle on. With the reclaimer, even with the temperature in the teens the gas heater stays off and the shop temp actually rises. I have heartily recommended this product to my friends.

We installed the heat reclaimer and was able to heat a two story house. Unlike previously, we didn't have a hot spot and the rest of the cold. A friend had one and recommended it and and it was money well spent.

Definitely this heat reclaimer exceeded my expectations in terms of heat output. It was amazing to find how much heat is normally lost up the chimney, and this reclaimer does a good job of giving you some of it back into the room. The automatic switch on it turns on when the heat is hot enough to allow the smoke to travel up the chimney and turns off when it isn't, which eliminates having to switch it on and off depending on the size of the fire. My wife wasn't so keen on having it installed, saying it would look unsightly, but lo and behold after having it on during a few cold days she loves it! And Aesthetically it blends well with our stove, which is a Drolet Savannah. The only reason I give it a 4 star instead of a 5 is because of the noise level of the fan. It isn't very loud but wonder if somehow it could have been made a tad bit quieter. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this reclaimer to my friends if they were to consider a woodstove.

It's rare that a product works extremely better that advertised, and this is one of those rare products. The heat output is amazing and our wood use has decreased as well. The unit was very easy to install, and was cranking out the heat within minutes of starting a fire. And it's not the wheezy, barely-can-feel-it heat that the fan on the wood stove puts out, and only after the firebox is at full temp. What is really amazing is the amount of heat that was wasted up the flue that is now recovered. The output of our wood stove has at least doubled. Magic Heat should be standard equipment with every wood stove!!

I love my magic reclaimer. It does it's job and then some. As the stove heats up the reclaimer comes on line ( thermastically) and runs until all the heat it dispersed into my living room and kitchen, then shuts off when the temperature cools down. I bought this because a friend told me about it. It was the best investment I ever made. We have cut our wood usage almost in half (we have a barrel stove that exclusively heats are entire 1300sqft cape). I was using lots of wood and the house with large single pain windows and very limited insulation was struggling to stay in the low 60's even the first floor directly below the stove. Now the entire house is very warm in the mid to high 60's even after the stove has been out for a few hours or with the temp being in the single digits (gotta love NH). Early in the fall I knew heating oil prices would spike and with that in mind I built a new two flue chimney planning to suppliment my heat with burning wood. Then I got lucky and aquired a very nice wood burning furnace. I got the new appliance installed and hooked up in October. Soon it became apparent to me that the chimney was overly warm to the touch. A lot of heat was going up the flue. I knew of the Magic Heater and knew that Northern sold them. I went on line ordered it and in days it was here, installed and saving me heat. As I write this review I can hear it in the background blowing heat into the living space. I give this product 5 stars because the price was right and it does exactly as I expected, no surprises.

This is the second unit that I have owned. The first I bought back in the mid 80's. The fan and the thermostat had quit working, so I purchased a new unit. They are pretty much the same now as back then. The thermostat quit working on the new unit a week after I installed it. I may have caused the problem by firing the stove with the power off, and overheated the unit. I am not sure if that caused the malfunction or it was just defective. I got a new thermostat switch from Grainger for $10. Cheaper then shipping the unit back.

I have a small three bedroom ranch house that is total electric, no natural gas out here... :-( Anyway, by adding this little jewel to our wood burning heater we are getting the otherwise 'lost heat' that was going up the flue. The blower that came with our wood heater does blow out the heat, but only after the fire has gotten the entire heater box warm enough, the biggest plus for the reclaimer is that it blows heat as soon as the flue pipe gets hot enough, this used to be wasted heat! It provides warmth sooner, and more than doubles the heat out-put during the entire time we have a fire going. One quick tip...keep it CLEAN.
The electric bill will make you smile, the central heat hardly ever has to kick in.

I purchased a Magic Heat Reclaimer for my basement about a month ago. I was easily able to install the product by myself within a couple of hours. I have found the Reclaimer very efficient in heating, it enables me to use heat that would have been wasted by going up the chimney. I am impressed with the fact that the unit has the ability to automatically turn off and on at set temperatures.
I would recommend this product to anybody trying to make their heating system more efficient.

The problem I have with this product is, it needs to be made of stainless steel.
it rusts very easily. I would not reccomend using it with coal for this reason.
Also the thermostat needs to be set to come on at a lower temp,
you end up loseing a lot of heat before it kicks the fan on.

I saw this item at a friend's house and knew it was exactly what I have been looking for to keep more of the heat from my wood stove in my home. I started using the Magic Heat which I purchased from Northern some time ago on my wood stove at home. I found it to be a good reliable device which allowed me to recover heat that otherwise would have gone up the chimney.

Recently I purchased the Magic Heat Reclaimer and added it to the operation of my wood stove. Prior to adding the Magic Heat Recaimer My wood stove would perform to a lower than average heat output. Constantly having to stoke the wood stove, allowing the wood to burn at faster and hotter temps in order to get more heat from it. Then I installed the Magic Heat Reclaimer! Now my wood stove has become vitually the primary heating source for my home. I am able to run the stove with a longer & lower burn, recapturing the heat that would normally be lost. The Heat Reclaimer is an wonderfull addition to our wood burning stove. The addition of this product & minor adjustments, reduced our wood consumption, & increased the heating in our shop. The wood burner is our major source of heat, within a couple of hours the shop which is 30' x 60' with 14' sidewalls,is comfortable enough to work in without a jacket. Simple install, and BAM! You have twice the heat that you were getting before! This is one of the best things since the wood stove was invented! Truthfully, if you have a freestanding wood or gas stove, yet you dont have one of these, 85% of your heat is going out through the stack! I actually burn less wood. The house is twice as warm as it usally is. The only thing I wish is that I had got this the same time that I got my stove.

After reading the reviews on this product I was sure I had found what I was looking for. Not only is this easy to install but it does everything it says it does. What a difference this makes in my home. It really helps to move heat around and it gets it from lost heat going up and out of the chimney. Well worth the price and I dont think you can find it at a better price besides here at Northern.

I first purchased a Magic Heat about 15 years ago. Last year I retired that one and installed a new one. The old one was in good condition, but I decided to take the precaution. I have a wood boiler in my basement, and the Magic Heat keeps it toasty and dry. Enough heat trickles up through the floor that my thermostat rarely opens my upstairs heat zone! Both heat savers have worked flawlessly for me. I have a basement office, and when I am down there I can monitor the function of my furnace based on the Magic Heat. When it kicks on, I know the automatic damper is open and the fire is hotter. If your flue is on the exterior of your home, you may want to consider whether drawing extra heat off will cool it too much and cause creosote. I don't have that problem. My masonry flue goes thru the center of my home and that keeps it warm. My new Magic Heat is slightly tight in the collar. I had trouble fitting the stove pipe into it. That will be a nuisance when cleaning, but a small drawback. It might actually be a problem with the size of the particular pipe, not the heater. I would recommend using some sort of support since the heater is not light. Too much pressure on the stovepipe could pop the joints. Overall, I would highly recommend this product for anyone who heats with wood.

I got this unit about two months ago. I have seen them in use on other people's stoves and have always wanted to get one for myself.
When I ordered it though Northern Tool and Equipment I had to order a unit designed for gas and then take it to the factory, which is only about seven miles from my home, and exchange it for one for wood. The main difference is in the fan switch.
When I first got it and began working on installing it, I found the flue openings to be too close to the same size as the flue pieces I was attaching to. After messing around with it for a bit, I was able to connect the flues to the unit and now those flues will not come apart from the unit. It is almost as if I welded them together, which I did not do, but, they are very securely connected.
It works very good for reclaimation of heat lost up the flue as the fire is burning. A very noticable amount of heat is reclaimed and it feels good on cold days to just put your hands in front of the opening and feel the heat.

I have found that one needs to use very dry wood while using this type of unit, otherwise, the air spaces between the tubes becomes somewhat filled with soot and creosote if one is not careful, But, if you have dry wood, they are wonderful.

I give a very high score for this unit if you have a heat generating appliance with a flue.

I installed this unit and found it to be a money saver, burn less wood. I currently have a wood stove with twin blowers and after I installed Magic Heat I needed less wood than Normaly to heat a 2300 square foot home.

I do wish Magic heat would incorporate or offer a kit for variable speed control for the fan. If there is one let people know.

I installed it in my great room in a few minutes and what a difference it makes. It took longer to cut the single wall pipe than it did to install it. It fit perfectly and does a great job of evenly heating a large great room with 22 foot ceilings. I ordered it and they said it was back ordered. I still received it in 7 days. I tried using a router speed control to reduce the fan RPM but it did not work. I am going to try using a light dimmer control. I am very satisfied with this unit and give it a double THUMBS UP!

The Magic Heat reclaimer works as advertised, but you do have to analyze your existing setup to determine if it's right for you. I ended up removing mine after about 5 weeks of use because it was decreasing the performance of my stove. I have a very high chimney with 2.5 turns, so my draft without the Magic Heat was nothing to brag about. When I added the Magic Heat, it did reduce my draft even further and caused the fire to not burn as hot. I also got more back draft when opening the door, which put smoke into my house.

If you have a stove/chimney combination with a strong draft, this unit will work very well for you. It definitely captures heat going up your chimney and returns it to the house. However, if your draft is marginal, I would recommend not getting it.

As far as installation, it was extremely easy. Once you have your stove pipe cut to the proper length, it literally takes less than 15 minutes to have it installed and ready to use.

Purchased a new airtite woodstove with double wall construction and double fan blower. Used for one season without Magic Heat unit. Stove burns very efficiently, but does not put out much heat to room until about 45 minutes after getting a good fire going. Seems like all heat is going to heat the inner parts of stove and the rest goes up the chimney.

After installing Magic Heat, we are getting heat from the unit before the fire is even going very well - about 5-10 minutes after lighting the kindling.

II was initially concerned about cooling the chimney too much creating a possible creosote problem, but this does not seem to be happening. My stove has a secondary burn chamber to consume the smoke and I do not use a damper. All fire control is with the air supply. With a good fire going, I can see little or no smoke comming from the chimney.

I also purchased a unit for my son and he is getting similar results.

This is a great product. I have a wood stove in the basement and it took hours to warm up before... Now, with MH, it is toasty in 30 minutes.

I do worry about the power going off while the wood stove is heating. I am trying to find the manual to order a spare set of electronics. I also have hooked it up to a UPS just in case. I have a portable generator an have used it and MH to heat my home in a power outage.

I installed this unit aboove my parlor stove yesterday. The only flaw I found was the crimped end of the 6" pipe was oversized compared to the single wall flue pipe I have. It took quite a bit of crimping and jiggering to get the unit in place. Other than that, it works fantastically well. I'm very pleased with the extra reclaimed heat. And it is no louder than the fan I was using to circulate air around the stove before the installation.

I installed the 6" duct oil furnace unit in my heating system just below my power vent. I doesn't throw a tremendous amount of heat when the boiler is on but I have to say, it did make a significant difference to the average temp in my basement. If there was one negative comment it would be that it comes with a 110 standard plug and they tell you in the instructions to never have the unit off while the funace is producing heat or the electrical components will get damaged. So, you will have to plug into the same power feed that feeds the boiler for safety reasons; if the fuse/breaker trips to the fan and not the boiler it will cause the situation mentioned above. I am planning on tying the power supply to the magic heat fan to my power vent timing circuit (which comes on before , and shuts down after the boiler runs). Other than that, I am happy to have the winter chill removed from my basement!

Wonderful product. Easy to install, but poor support from manufacturer.
Once installed, I was AMAZED at how well this thing works. I am re-couping a great deal of lost heat and at the same time, the fan forces that heat out into the room, etc. I find I am using 75% less wood as I do not need to keep the stove blazing hot to radiate--Magic heat does this. Once at temp. a relatively small burn will keep the tubes plenty hot. As a result, I do not have a "hot spot" in the room where the stove is--the room heats up evenly and then seems to stay relatively stable. The Magic Heat fan itself turns on and off based on on preset tube temperature, though one can turn the fan on manually--say for Summer cooling use, or whatever.

Only recommendation I would make is to plug Magic Heat into an outlet controlled by a light dimmer. I did this by making a box with a pig-tale which plugs into the wall. In the box is a dimmer and a plug. This is important to me as the Magic Heat fan is MORE than adequate. I find that it is more comfortable and less noisy (~~75% of fan noise is created in the last ~~10% of top fan speed with any fan) to turn the fan down to about 60% of its capability. This is a modification which the manufacturer suggested, so if its done safely, its kosher. If making one of these is not in your game plan, and you want one, write me and I will make one up and sell it to you.

The product seems to be made well and is easy enough to clean--looks like it belongs, does not take up much space and has powered our heating bill substantially. The fact that I am using MUCH less wood, is a big plus for my back. Since the unit is completely sealed, ALL smoke goes up the pipe and none escapes into the house. About the only requirement which is not explicitly stated in their advertising is that, for best performance, the unit should be mounted no less than 12" off of the stove.

I do not work for these folks, I just happen to live in the CO mountains, where it gets cold. I REALLY like it when I can order a product and it works better than expectation. For me, that is a rarity, and it is for this reason that I so highly recommend this unit. Why waste heat when a fan is SO cheap to run?!?
